Chapter 8: The Secret Passage

Chapter 8- The Secret Passage

“Oh my god.” Cleo mumbled.

“S-she killed Galton.” Zea breathed. “She killed her own father!”

Everyone was silent. They couldn’t believe what they had read.

“G-guys. Do you know what day is today?” Scarlet suddenly queered.

Darcie looked at her watch. It was fifteen minutes past twelve. “November 30th!”

“It’s Kameko and her dad’s death anniversary!” Cleo hissed.

Fenella dropped the diary as if it was something terrifying. She backed off a few steps.

“We better get out of here now.” Fenella gulped. “I don’t like the idea of being in this house the day of the owner’s death anniversary.”

Scarlet nodded. “Yeah, I so much agree with you.”

They marched out of the room and went down the stairs. Thunder then boomed across the sky. A flash of lightning followed after. The flashlight that they carried suddenly went off.

“What happened?” Fenella asked.

“The batteries died down!” Zea panicked.

“Darcie, stop putting your cold hand around my arm!” Cleo grumpily said.

“I’m not.” Darcie answered.

“Then, who-?”

Another thunder made their heart jump. They screamed and ran through the house. Rain started pouring heavily outside.

Fenella tripped off. She fell hard on the linoleum floors.

“Fen!” Zea called. She approached her. “Are you okay?”

“Oww. My ankle hurts.” Fenella massaged her swollen foot.

“It looks bad.” Scarlet remarked.

“Can you walk?” Cleo asked.

“I-I don’t think so.” Fenella replied.

“C’mon. I’ll carry you.” Zea offered.

“I’ll lead the way.” Darcie said.

They walked through the dark house, the only light illuminated from the piece of candle that Cleo found.

“Wait, wait, wait. This room looked familiar.” Zea uttered. “Hey, this is the top floor! See, that’s Kameko’s portrait!”

“That means we are going on circles!” Cleo concluded.

“Oh my god. This can’t be happening.” Darcie said under her breath.

“What if we can’t get out of this place?” Scarlet speculated.

“Don’t say that. We’re all going home.” Zea assured her buddy. The problem is, how?

“I think I can remember where we went through, but, there had been a large hole in it. We couldn’t get back.” Cleo explained. “ How about your path, Zea?”

Zea thought hard. “I was not paying any attention to where we were going. I didn’t expect the mansion to be this big.”

“Well, we have to find a way out by ourselves.” Darcie presumed. “Even if it’ll take us forever.”

Fen embraced her friends. “We can do this. Let’s not panic, okay? Deep breath. C’mon. Let’s go get out of this house.”

The others nodded.

“Wait, Fen. Can you still remember where you stumbled?” Cleo asked.

“Yeah, I think so. Why?”

“Take us there.”

“This is the exact spot.” Fenella pointed to the loose floor.

Cleo examined it under the small light from a candle.

“Just as I thought.” Cleo snapped her fingers. “Look, an opening!”

They squinted through the unfastened board. There was indeed a narrow path underneath it. They eyed each other.

“Want to take the chance?” Zea was uncertain.

Scarlet sighed. “We don’t have any way.”

Slowly, one by one, they went down a series of stairs. They searched the somewhat underground passage of Mort’s mansion for any sign of an exit. They reached the end and found a hole big enough for them to go through. They rushed happily outside. They danced with joy and rapture. They didn’t care even if it was raining very hard. All that matters is that they got out of the haunted mansion safe.
