Chaptwr 10: Torn Between

School again. I choose not to wait for Harris so I went to school using my skateboard again. As I was on my way to the school’s gate, someone bumped on me. CRASH! I fell down my board.

What the hell-?

I looked up and saw the guy from yesterday.

You again?
Cassie? Sorry about that.

He helped me get up.

Really I am.
Yeah, whatever. Just look at where you’re going.

We picked our boards up and marched to our rooms.

What class are you?
I-D.
(smiled) We’ll be seeing a lot of each other, classmate.

The stern professor was already there when we entered.

Prof: Good morning Ms. Appelbaum. Oh and Mr. Mednick, it’s nice for you to join us for today.

I didn’t mind the teachers’ squabble and headed straight to my seat. That Mednick guy followed behind and sat on my left.

Classmate: Hey, I was sitting there!
Well now its mine.

I looked to my right and saw Harris glaring at me, then to the guy, and back to me again.
What’s his problem?

Chapter 9: Like an Endless Storm Chasing a Mystery

Stop following me.
Skateboarding is dangerous.
Leave me alone.

I skated much faster. I lost him. I stopped at the darkest part of the school. I still don’t want to go home. I rested my board against a tree trunk and sat on a bench.

Finally, peace and quiet. This is my world.
“Ehem…”

I turned around and saw a guy in a black outfit.

You’re in my place.
Since when is this yours? Last time I checked, this is still a democratic country.

He then sat next to me.

I like your style. What’s your name?
I don’t give names to people I don’t know.
So, it’s Cassidy?

How did he know that? My question had been answered when I turned around and saw my notebook in his hands.

Give me that!
Nice name, Cassidy.
Whatever.

I decided to leave. It’s getting late.

See you around, Cassie!

He waved me goodbye. I wonder if Harris is home. Wait, why am I thinking of him? I must be really exhausted by now.

Chapter 8: A Minute Radiance of Hope

Monday. I have no choice but to go to school. I prefer sulking in the classroom than to be stuck here with Ingrid in the house. I got on the family car. I then realize I forgot something so I went back inside. When I did return, the family car was nowhere in sight.

What the? Where’s the car?
Cassie? You’re still here? I thought you left earlier so I told Harris, then he took the family car with him. I’m sorry, hunny.
Thanks for nothing.

I found my skateboard so I jumped right in and went to school. As I proceeded inside the classroom, the professor spoke.

Prof: You’re late Miss Appelbaum.
Yeah, I know that.
Prof: Sit in front then we’ll resume our class.

I went to the back of the room and sat on the last chair.

I don’t want to seat in front, Ma’am.

The professor seemed irritated. Yet she continued her lesson. After some time, Harris showed in the classroom door.

Prof: Mr. Gelles! Where have you been? Don’t you students know the value of education?

I tapped the back of my classmate in front of me.

What’s he doing here?
Classmate: He’s our new classmate, Harris Gelles. He was introduced this morning. Then he went out and returned just now.

I turned to my right and saw Harris seating beside me. He had a strange look in his eyes.

Where have you gone to? I was looking all over for you.

What? He’s been looking for me?

Chapter 7: What's in the Name?

The guy smirked at me.

Am I funny or something?
I thought you were in a hunger strike, missy.
I want to eat, are you bothered by that? Maybe you’ve forgotten that I am the daughter of the owner of this house?
Sorry.

That shut him up. I continued my meal while looking at him. He went to get a drink. Then he made his way towards the table. He sat in front of me while I continued munching my food. He was staring at me now.

You look cute when you eat like that. You’re the only girl I’ve seen that could swallow food that much.
What? I’m hungry?

He laughed. When he did, two dimples appeared on each side of his cheek.

You’re not bad at all. What’s your name?
How could you not know?
Oh, right. Cassidy. Dyan Cassidy.
What are you still doing here? You’ll wake up everyone.
Do you want to be alone at this time of night?

I gulped. It is starting to get scary if this guy hasn’t showed up.

Wait for me. I’m almost finished.

The guy smiled the sweetest one to me.

What’s your name big guy?
Its Harris.

Chapter 6: The Great Escape

My stomach was rumbling that night. I haven’t eaten anything since this morning. I wish I ate during dinner. But, I hate facing Ingrid (I will never call her step-mom or mom for that matter) and that shirtless jerk who stole my room. I’m not also in the mood to be with my father because of my bad behavior. I know he’s angry at me but who cares anyway. My tummy rumbled again. I have to eat!

I went outside my ‘new’ room then went down the banister. It was dark and I can’t see anything in my way. I don’t want to wake anyone up by turning on the lights either. I tiptoed my way to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. Inside, I saw some food so I took them out and settled them in the table. I didn’t bother to heat them in the microwave for I can’t take my hunger anymore.

That Ingrid can sure cook delicious food.

I was enjoying my little meal when the kitchen lights suddenly went on. My eyes adjusted on the sudden brightness of the room. When I can see clearly, the figure of the shirtless guy stood before the kitchen door.

I thought there was someone here.

Chapter 5: .. And You Feel Like You're Being Left Behind

Full of rage, I attacked the culprit.

What do you think you’re doing?!

He was in deep slumber I guess, so I shook his broad shoulders to wake him up. Wrong move! He suddenly grasped my arm then pulled my whole body with him in the bed. I am now facing him with his leg over mine. What am I, his pillow? I was now really mad. So, I punched his face. That must’ve woken him up.

Hey! Who are you?
I think the question is who are YOU?

I made my way out of the bed. His hazel eyes revealed confusion. I stared at him hard. Perhaps my father heard the small fuss. He appeared through the room’s door. Ingrid followed after him.

Cassie!
Oh, sweetheart. I should have told you earlier.
Who is he? And what is he doing on MY room?
He is the son of my best friend. His family is living in Korea, so he would temporarily stay with us until they will come back.
And who gave you permission to do that?

I did Dyan Cassidy.

Dad is real mad now. He only calls me by my two names when he is angry. But I don’t care. I’m furious too.

What, I was gone for a week and this house turned into an orphanage?

The shirtless guy suddenly spoke.

If you really want your room, you can have it. I didn’t know it was yours.
You wrecked this place then give it back afterwards? No thanks, I don’t like the color of this room now anyways.

I can’t take being in this room anymore. I started leave.

I’ll help you bring your things to your new room, sweetheart.
Don’t tell me what to do. You’re not my mother.

Chapter 4: The Unwanted Visitor

We’re home.

I went down our car and surveyed the three-storey mansion. Nothing seems to change.

Welcome home, hunny.

Ugh, correction. Everything will be changed from now on.

Hello, Cassie. I’m glad you’re okay now.
You wanted me to die, admit it.
I would never! C’mon, I cooked breakfast.
I’m not hungry.

Actually, I could eat a mountain right now. The food at the hospital sucks. But then, I suddenly lost my appetite. I went across the porch to our living room and scurried upstairs. I went to my room. When I opened it, my eardrums almost exploded from the loud music that seemed to fill my space.

What the heck--?

My pink coated room was almost covered with posters of boy bands and rock stars. The cabinet on the corner was overflowing with GUY clothing. Everything was a mess!

In my bed, in my precious queen-sized bed, lay my culprit. A shirtless guy was snoring his way to sleep!

Chapter 3: Pieces of Dreams Have Been Shattered

I woke up to see the white-colored room and the smell of alcohol; I then realized I am in a hospital. Thoughts flooded back why I was strapped at this place right now. The doctor came and broke my notions. After checking on me, he then read one by one, the different pills I drank, the reason I’m here. I then understood that it was my 7th day in the hospital bed because of attempted self-poisoning.

Good thing someone found you before any of those drugs took effect on your body.

Whatever.

Ugh. Why shouldn’t I have died anyway?

Ever since the death of my mother years ago, my life is meaningless. The gleeful, outgoing, and cheery Cassidy transformed into a miserable, melancholic, and depressed person. I hated everything in this world now. I even hate myself why I’m still alive. It wasn’t the first time I did those things.

Dad went to the hospital that day to take me home. Home? I don’t even have that now. A year after mom’s death, Dad met this new woman – Ingrid. They’re even planning for a wedding to be held next year. She took Dad away from me. She even lives at OUR house now. She took everything. And now, I don’t have any one. I’m all alone.

Chapter 2: The Eternal Slumber

Bright sunlight shone through my bedroom window when I opened my eyes. The sweet chirping of the birds told me that it was morning the next day.

I hurried downstairs and found Dad in the dining table having breakfast.

Good morning, Dad!

Cassie! You’re up early.
I just missed eating my breakfast beside you.
Oh did you? By the way, I have something for you, princess. Come here.
What is it?
Close your eyes first, pumpkin.

I shut them tight and when I open them a little while after, a present wrapped in silver foil with a pink ribbon on it was seen before me.

A present? For me?

I eagerly opened the small gift. A big smile was formed upon my lips when I saw what’s inside. A pink dress with a black belt just above the waistline was neatly folded in the package.

I love it Dad! Thank you!
Anything for you, hunny.
Where’s Mom? I would like to show this to her!
I think she’s outside. By the garden.

With that, I jogged to the front of the house and let my eyes scanned our garden place. There. I saw Mom by the roses.

Mom!
Sweetheart, what are you doing here this early?
Dad brought me a present! Look!
Oh, this would look great on you. It matches your hazel eyes, Cassie.
You think so, Mom?

Suddenly, Mom started sobbing.

You know I’ll always love you Cassie, and that I’ll never leave you right?
Of course, Mom. Why are you crying?
I sure wish I can see you smiling while wearing that dress. You mean so much to me. I wish I could stay with you forever.
What are you talking about Mom? Are you gonna leave me again?
Please tell Mom that you won’t hate anyone or do something that will ruin your life.
Why Mom? I don’t understand.

My head was spinning. I don’t have a single idea what my mother was talking about. She then handed me a rose.

You are as beautiful as that rose, Cassie. You, you have a wonderful life ahead of you. Keep going sweetheart. I love you.

She then embraced me as if she’s never gonna let me go. What’s going on? I remained imprisoned in my mother’s weak arm. When I look up, her eyes were close.

Mom?

Then it struck me. Her heartbeat suddenly stopped. She’s not breathing. My Mom’s not breathing!

Mom! No! You promised! You said, you said, you would never leave me! No! I don’t want to be alone again!

I can’t see clearly. Tears were blocking my eyesight as I shook my mother’s lifeless body. It’s no use I know. She would never wake up again.

Chapter 1: Are Promises Meant to be Broken?

My first love story to be blog! =D
Actually, noon ko pa to natapos, but tinatamad akong i-type sa pc. Hehe.
The inspiration of the story was the song, “Blue Sky” by Hale and rainy days.
Some titles are song lyrics too.
So here it is. Hope you like it. =P

“I hate it when it rains... just like now. It's like every drop vanishes the color my world has and in a matter of seconds, everything turns into gray...”

CHAPTER 1: ARE PROMISES MEANT TO BE BROKEN?

Cassie! Cassidy!

From my room; I unexpectedly heard my Dad’s voice. Realizing this, I quickly got out of bed and ran across the hallway. At the top of the stairs, I can see my father’s sturdy figure as he stood at the foot of the banister.

Dad!

With a big grin plastered on my face, I dashed with all my might to meet my father whose embrace I longed for almost half a year. He was back! My parents are back!

Dad! You’re home at last! I’ve waited for so long, Dad!

I cuddled my father firmly. He kept me within his arms and lifted my whole body. I missed how he always did that for me.

And I missed my little princess. How had you been?
Terrible. I missed you a lot. Oh, where’s Mom?
She’s waiting for you outside.

I rushed towards our veranda and there I saw the petite frame of my mother.

Mom!

She embraced me like there was no tomorrow.

Cassidy, my child. I missed you, sweetheart.
I missed you more, Mom. What took you so long in the US? Why arrive just now?
I-it’s was business, Cassie. I’m sorry. From now on, I’ll spend every single day with you.

Mom gave me a weak smile. Her ocean-blue eyes looked like its hiding something from me.

That would be great! Promise me you won’t leave me again, Mama?
Promise.

Later that night, when everyone else in the house was sleeping…

What now, Lewis? The doctor said my illness couldn’t be treated by anyone. We went everywhere in the world! I’m afraid of leaving Cassie. She’s so young. Just so young.
We tried everything, Lethia. Everything.

Barkada Trips.

  1. Movie Marathons

WHERE: Tere, Tam2x, Candy, Dane’s House

This was the 1st barkada trip ever since we got together. It was always on Tere’s house because it was the nearest one at school, although the very 1st movie marathon was held on Dane2x’s house.

  1. Food trip

WHERE: Mcdo, Jollibee, Elena’s, Janikka Foodspot, Fahrenheit, Quarterhouse, Andoks, Cindy’s, Kitchenitos, Shakey’s, Alexis Pizzeria, Tita Del’s Kitchen, Bestfriend’s Place, Mister Donut, Dunkin Dount etc.

The original plan was to eat in every foodspot but we failed. =)
We’ve been through it all, from eating to just bread in Elena’s to eating the whole Mega Meals in Jollibee.

  1. Playing Counter strike

WHERE: Netopia, Headquarters, C4

Wahaha. We do computer games too. We spent at least 3-4 hours just playing the new found hobby.

  1. Beach/Pool Party

WHERE: Baluarte Pool, Sahara Beach Resort

Next level na to. We plan for everything. It was exciting, but hindi pa na complete yung whole barkada sa mga outing na yun.

  1. Tambay

WHERE: Tere or Daddy Xan’s house

Of course boarding house was the ultimate option (Tere’s house) yet the balcony in the uppermost part of Daddy Xan’s house and playing drums was a big YEY. We do nothing but share endless stories or study for that physics exam.

Chorvalicious.

Here’s my awesome group of friends.
College was a bit tough but I survived it with them by my side.

Chapter 9: The Big Surprise

Finally. My first horror story reached its end. Made a little twist.
Just remember, happy endings don't mix well with horror.:)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 9- The Big Surprise
The next day, at school.
“Hey guys!” Keely waved to her friends. She joined them in their group table at the cafeteria. Next to Fen’s house, the school canteen was their second favorite place to hang-out.
“Hi Keely!” Zea waved. “We were just talking about our experience in the haunted mansion.”
Keely sat down. “Oh yeah. Exciting, was it?”
“Yeah! And we finally won the issue that there are no ghosts.” Zea grinned. “We did not saw anything in the Mort’s manor.”
“Okay, okay.” Scarlet surrendered. “You won, that’s why I’m treating you guys with ice cream later.”
“Yey, ice cream!” Fenella cheered. “What a thrilling adventure. Except for the part where I bruised my ankle.”
“How is it now?” Scarlet asked.
“It’s fine. I can walk by myself.”
“And too bad we forgot to bring the diary with us.” Darcie said glumly.
Cleo nodded in agreement. “Yup, no one believes we knew what truly happened to the Mort family.”
“Yeah.” Scarlet drank her iced tea. “I can’t even believe what we went through.”
“I was really terrified when we learned we’re going nowhere inside the house.” Fenella reacted. “To think that we can’t get out of it gives me goose bumps.”
“Yeah. Cleo was always a genius.” Zea praised.
Cleo smiled. “No need to thank me.”
“Wow, you guys seemed to have a nice adventure inside the house. Too bad I couldn’t make it that night.” Keely miserably said.
Zea faced her. She looked confused. “What do you mean you did not make it?”
Now it was Keely’s turn to be confused. “Didn’t you guys receive a text message?”
“What message?” Even Darcie was stunned.
Keely eyed all of them. “Well, that evening before our meeting time, something came up. My parents are going out of town and they asked me to baby-sit my cousin for the night. As much as I wanted to come, my parents wouldn’t let me. I can’t leave the baby all alone so I asked my mom to text you, Zea that I couldn’t come with you guys. I guess she forgot to do that. I’m sorry. Why are you all surprised?”
“If you did not come that night,” Fenella thought. “Then who was with us the whole time?”
“Huh, why?” Keely was puzzled. “What happened?”
“B-but when we met at the old willow tree there was six of us!” Scarlet said in bewilderment.
“You were there, Keely!” Zea cried out. “You were even with us inside the house!”
“This is not funny, Keely. If you thought you could get even with us because of what we did to you in the mansion-“ Darcie shrieked.
Keely was still baffled. “Hey, I wish I was joking, but I’m not. I really did not make it.”
“We met at the old willow tree, right?” Cleo analyzed. “And that’s where Kameko died.”
“So…” Fenella whispered. “The girl who was with us inside the mansion the whole time wasn’t Keely…”
Zea’s heart was beating fast. She knew that night something was wrong. And she found her answer. “…but Kameko, herself!”
Chapter 8: The Secret Passage
Chapter 8- The Secret Passage
“Oh my god.” Cleo mumbled.
“S-she killed Galton.” Zea breathed. “She killed her own father!”
Everyone was silent. They couldn’t believe what they had read.
“G-guys. Do you know what day is today?” Scarlet suddenly queered.
Darcie looked at her watch. It was fifteen minutes past twelve. “November 30th!”
“It’s Kameko and her dad’s death anniversary!” Cleo hissed.
Fenella dropped the diary as if it was something terrifying. She backed off a few steps.
“We better get out of here now.” Fenella gulped. “I don’t like the idea of being in this house the day of the owner’s death anniversary.”
Scarlet nodded. “Yeah, I so much agree with you.”
They marched out of the room and went down the stairs. Thunder then boomed across the sky. A flash of lightning followed after. The flashlight that they carried suddenly went off.
“What happened?” Fenella asked.
“The batteries died down!” Zea panicked.
“Darcie, stop putting your cold hand around my arm!” Cleo grumpily said.
“I’m not.” Darcie answered.
“Then, who-?”
Another thunder made their heart jump. They screamed and ran through the house. Rain started pouring heavily outside.
Fenella tripped off. She fell hard on the linoleum floors.
“Fen!” Zea called. She approached her. “Are you okay?”
“Oww. My ankle hurts.” Fenella massaged her swollen foot.
“It looks bad.” Scarlet remarked.
“Can you walk?” Cleo asked.
“I-I don’t think so.” Fenella replied.
“C’mon. I’ll carry you.” Zea offered.
“I’ll lead the way.” Darcie said.
They walked through the dark house, the only light illuminated from the piece of candle that Cleo found.
“Wait, wait, wait. This room looked familiar.” Zea uttered. “Hey, this is the top floor! See, that’s Kameko’s portrait!”
“That means we are going on circles!” Cleo concluded.
“Oh my god. This can’t be happening.” Darcie said under her breath.
“What if we can’t get out of this place?” Scarlet speculated.
“Don’t say that. We’re all going home.” Zea assured her buddy. The problem is, how?
“I think I can remember where we went through, but, there had been a large hole in it. We couldn’t get back.” Cleo explained. “ How about your path, Zea?”
Zea thought hard. “I was not paying any attention to where we were going. I didn’t expect the mansion to be this big.”
“Well, we have to find a way out by ourselves.” Darcie presumed. “Even if it’ll take us forever.”
Fen embraced her friends. “We can do this. Let’s not panic, okay? Deep breath. C’mon. Let’s go get out of this house.”
The others nodded.
“Wait, Fen. Can you still remember where you stumbled?” Cleo asked.
“Yeah, I think so. Why?”
“Take us there.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“This is the exact spot.” Fenella pointed to the loose floor.

Cleo examined it under the small light from a candle.

“Just as I thought.” Cleo snapped her fingers. “Look, an opening!”

They squinted through the unfastened board. There was indeed a narrow path underneath it. They eyed each other.

“Want to take the chance?” Zea was uncertain.

Scarlet sighed. “We don’t have any way.”

Slowly, one by one, they went down a series of stairs. They searched the somewhat underground passage of Mort’s mansion for any sign of an exit. They reached the end and found a hole big enough for them to go through. They rushed happily outside. They danced with joy and rapture. They didn’t care even if it was raining very hard. All that matters is that they got out of the haunted mansion safe.

Chapter 7: The Lost Diary

Chapter 7- The Lost Diary

“I believe we are on Kameko’s room now.” Fen changed the topic.

Darcie examined the big room. “Nice place she got here.”

They looked through the room. It was outdated and a little archaic. The once pink lacy curtains turned dirty and some parts are ripped. The paint on the wall seemed to fade. There was a big family portrait at the center. Fen came closer and let her fingers run through the old thing.

It showed Galton with the same grim expression as he stood proud with a cigarette on his hand. To his left was his wife, Margaret, her brown curly chin length hair neatly combed in place. She looked dazzling in her sparkly red dress that cascaded on the floor. Her face registered a tender smile. Seated at the center was none other than Kameko, her elegant black dress complimented well with her pale skin. Her straight black hair was pulled up into a ponytail.

“That’s odd. There’s an opening at the back of this.” Fenella noticed.

Darcie turned to see. Fen was right. She reached for the painting and opened it. It showed a secret compartment. “It’s a vault!”

“Oh my god. I have never seen this before.” Scarlet gasped.

“What do you think is the combination?” Zea gushed with excitement.

Cleo snapped her fingers. “Why don’t we try 113097?”

Darcie followed by putting her fingers on the wheel and turning it on the number. Click! The dial opened!

“How did you know that?” Fenella wondered.

“Well, I thought of the date when Kameko died. November 30, 1997.” Cleo explained proudly.

“Look, I think I found something!” Darcie explained. She reached over and found a box. She opened it and spilled the contents in the floor. Diamond rings, gold watches, and silver earrings sparkled through the carpeted floor.

“Wow. Look at all these treasures!” Darcie exclaimed.

“Do not touch it Darcie! It’s not yours!” Scarlet ordered.

Fenella peered through the vault again. “Hey guys! I found a diary! I think its Kameko’s!” She took it out from the vault and they settled on the shabby bed. “Listen.” she then started reading.

November 28, 1997

I can’t wait for this day to end. The day after tomorrow, Patrick and I shall live our life full of love and happiness. But, something was wrong. I think my father doesn’t like him. If he did something against us I will KILL him.

November 29, 1997

He thought I didn’t know. But too bad I did. Mom told me. Tonight, something in this house will change my life.

November 30, 1997

The plan was carried on. I waited for Patrick to come. But I knew he wasn’t coming. I smiled. But Dad didn’t. He approached me and told me Patrick doesn’t love me. I called him a liar. He screamed at me and told me to stop being such a stubborn child. That was the time I showed him the knife on my hand. He was stunned and backed off. I took a step and another. He was cornered on the old willow tree. There was nowhere to run. I smirked. He then told me the truth. He said he tricked Patrick and he went far, far away. Where? He did not know. My grin grew wider. “I know, Dad.” I told him. He apologized. Too late for that now. Filled with anger and grief I stabbed the knife into my father’s chest. Then another. He was struggling but he didn’t expect this to happen. He was gasping for help, but I just stood there, laughing. He died right then. I buried his body and hid it by the tree. After writing this I shall kill myself on that tree again. And as for this diary, I will hide it so that no one shall know what really happened on the night of November 30th.

Chapter 6: The Portrait

Chapter 6- The Portrait

“Did you see that?” Fenella cried.

“See what?” Zea asked.

“I think someone’s following us.” Fen whispered.

“That’s ridiculous. Were alone this building.” Zea said.

Zea turned around. She sensed something was wrong. Something’s definitely not right. Yet, she couldn’t put her finger on it. She heaved a sigh. “Let’s continue. Darcie and the others may have reached the top floor by now.”

Cold wind blew upon an opened window. The hairs at the back of their necks tingled. It felt as if someone was watching their every move. Someone who can’t be seen by their naked eyes.

Zea turned into an intersection and climbed the winding stairs. At the foot of it, there was a wall and a big wooden door. On the wall rests a portrait. Although dim, she can clearly make out the hand-painted picture in the canvass. It was a girl with ebony black hair that cascaded down her shoulders. She had a creamy complexion and hazel brown eyes that seemed to sparkle. Her thin red lips curled into a tiny smile.

“She’s pretty.” Fenella observed. “She must be Kameko right?”

“This picture gives me the creeps.” Zea commented.

Fenella edged closer. “She looks a bit like you, Keely, don’t you think? Same eyes and almost the same hair.”

“C’mon guys! Let’s go inside.” Zea headed towards the door. She opened it and a blood curdling scream escaped from her mouth.

“What--?” They rushed to their friend and their eyes went wide to what they saw. A girl was hanging on the ceiling, her head tilted in an awful angle. Traces of bright red blood were found in her white dress and in her face too. Her mouth was opened in an anguished cry. Her body swung back and forth. It made a sound. Creak. Creak. Creak.

“Aahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!”

Then they heard boom of laughter. They saw Scarlet coming out of a cabinet. Cleo went out of her hiding place too.

“You should’ve seen your faces!”

“You looked really afraid!”

“Boo!” Darcie showed on their back. “Surprise!” Then she chuckled.

“Y-you scared us!” Fenella managed to speak.

Zea was catching her breath. Her heart was beating fast. “That wasn’t funny. At all.”

“C’mon, it’s just a doll on a long dress. Can’t you guys take a laugh?” Scarlet giggled.

“It’s not funny when you’re on our part.” Fenella spoke. “And you shouldn’t have touched the things that are not yours.”

“We’re sorry okay.” Cleo apologized. “We didn’t mean it.”

Zea inspected the creature that seemed to be alive a few seconds ago. “ It really looked so real.”

Chapter 5: Mort’s Black Hole

Chapter 5- Mort’s Black Hole

“Hey guys, why don’t we stop this silliness right now and head back to Fenella’s house to watch some movies instead?” Scarlet suggested.

“We can’t turn back, Scarlet.” Darcie said. “Not now.”

“Don’t worry. Nothing bad has happened.” Cleo spoke.

“Nothing yet. I really have a bad feeling about this. And when I get a bad feeling, it usually results to something worst later on.” Scarlet rationalized.

Darcie didn’t mind. She continued to walk ahead.

“Wait you guys!” I-I c-can’t see clear—aahhh!!”

“Scarlet!” Cleo and Darcie called.

They turned around and saw Scarlet clinging to a loose plank nearly falling into an infinite depth. “Help me!”

“Stay there and don’t move!” It looks like the floor gave up by Scarlet’s weight. She and Cleo slowly approached their anxious friend. They were nearly at the top floor of the mansion now, and falling down sounded unpleasant.

“Careful! The surface is flimsy at this part. The three of us may fall.” Scarlet warned.

“I’m going to get Scarlet. You tug us out Darcie.” Cleo directed. “You weigh heavier than me.”

“I do not!”

“Yes, you are.”

“Are you saying I’m fat?”

“Guys! This is not the time for any weight issue! Need a hand here!” Scarlet shrieked as the floor cracked a bit. “Hurry!”

“Okay, okay. You get Scarlet.” Darcie agreed. “But it won’t be my fault if we all fall because you said you were lighter.”

“Don’t point the finger of responsibility at me.” Cleo criticized.

“Guys!” Scarlet called for attention.

“Okay, sheesh.” Darcie surrendered. “Now go!”

Cleo gently headed towards Scarlet. Scarlet held to Cleo’s outstretched arm and with all her might pulled her friend up. The floor gave up but before they could fall, Darcie yanked them to a sturdy ground.

“That was close.” Darcie said breathlessly.

“Thanks, Darcie.” Scarlet gratefully said.

“Told you.” Cleo taunted.

“No problem. C’mon were almost there.”

Cleo winced. “Nearly where? This place seemed to stretch out to infinity.”

“The topmost part of the building.”

Chapter 4: This is Where it Begins

Chapter 4- This is Where it Begins

Later on that night, the six of them decided to meet at the old willow tree, in front of the Mort manor. They were already there except for one.

Darcie glanced at her watch. It read 9:30. “Where’s Fen? She’s late!”

“Maybe she backed off?” Zea asked.

“There was a deal. She would come.” Cleo said.

As if by word, Fen showed up. She was catching for her breath.

“Sorry I took so long to get here. Long story.”

“Okay. Here’s the agreement. Since this house is far too big for us, we’ll explore it in two groups. I, Fen, and Keely are in one group while you Cleo and Scarlet are going with Darcie.”

“We’ll meet you guys at the top floor. C’mon, let’s go.” Darcie and the others sprinted to the back of the house.

“Okay. I sure hope you guys won’t stumble upon a ghost!” Zea scoffed.

“Let’s go.” Fenella said.

The Mort’s residence’ old gate stood high and sturdy through the cracked pavement. Its once white paint turned yellowish with some part dried and faded. It creaked as Fenella opened it imparting an awful cry. The trio then went through the grass that was left uncut through the years.

They proceeded to the brown door that remained well-built. Its intricate design showed it was constructed ages ago. There was a sculpted head of tiger in the middle, its mouth opened wide revealing a piece of metal ring. Fenella reached for the door and turned the knob. It didn’t budge.

“Let’s try getting in through the windows.” Zea instructed.

“I’ll look for a piece of wood to bash through it.” Fenella said.

The minute they turned their backs at the door, it suddenly opened with a creaking sound.

“H-how--?” Fenella uttered.

Zea gulped. “Okay, looks like we’re invited.”

Her friends dared not to speak. They went inside the building. It was dark and they couldn’t see anything.

“I’ll try the lights!” Zea said as she scanned the walls for any switches. She then found one, so she turned it on. Their eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness of the old room.

“Whoa. This house seriously needs a lot of cleaning.” Fenella examined.

They were standing through the grand entrance with a large space spared for any of the celebration. There were portraits lined in the walls covered with washed-out wallpapers. The chandeliers still possessed its majestic likeness as is hangs on the ceiling. There were pieces of odd-looking figurines placed on black wooden tables. At the center of the huge room was where the luxurious staircase located. Almost everything was covered with dust and cobwebs. Some floors were loose and may give up anytime.

“Whoa. Serious wealth.” Zea muttered under her breath.

The light flickered then went off leaving all of them in the darkness.

“What happened?” Fen freaked out.

“I think the lights not working anymore, considering how old this house is.” Zea explained. “But I have with me a flashlight.” She shone the small beam of light to the floor. “Keep close to me. This house may have holes in the floor.”

They followed Zea which led the way.

Chapter 3: Hunger for Escapade

Chapter 3- Hunger for Escapade

The next morning, Zea, Fen, and Keely squeezed their way through the congested cafeteria. The scent of mac and cheese filled the air. Some students were laughing at the corner, others were chatting with their buddies. The line to the food court was endless, some were even getting impatient of the slow service. They found their friends in a table nearby.

“Hey guys.” Keely greeted. “We finally found you.”

“We’ve reserved you seats.” Cleo offered.

“Thanks. The canteen is always full of people. We barely survived!” Fenella cracked a joke.

“Pass me the tacquitos.” Zea requested as soon as she sat down.

“Hey Zea, what happened to your arm?” Fenella noticed.

“Some crazy cat in your street did it.” Darcie said and shoved a mouthful of corn chips in her mouth.

“Mort’s present.” Keely said as a matter-of-factly.

Zea fingered the small cut. “It’s nothing really. I’m okay.”

“I’m bored. And school is not helping either. “ Darcie said out of blue.

“How about a movie marathon at Fen’s place after class?” Scarlet suggested.

“We always do that. And I’m tired of movies. Let’s do something extraordinary!” Zea proposed.

“I don’t like the sound of that.” Keely doubted.

“I know!” Darcie suddenly flicked her fingers. “Let’s go for an adventure…”

“At the Mort mansion!” Zea continued.

“Whaat?” Keely and Scarlet cried in chorus.

“Guys, keep it down.” Cleo told her friends.

“Nah-uh. I’m not going.” Scarlet shook her head in disagreement.

“I’ll double that.” Keely seconded.

“C’mon you guys. It would be fun. Consider it as a memorable experience!” Fenella protested.

“Yeah, it would not be the same if the whole gang is not complete.” Cleo pleaded.

“It’s okay. These weaklings are not going with us. They’re afraid of ghosts.” Zea smirked.

“Yeah, they’re scared. Don’t worry, they are going to miss a day full of excitement.” Darcie teased.

“We are not weak. We are not cowards if that’s what you think.” Keely encountered.

“And ghosts do exist.” Scarlet opposed.

“Well, prove it. Go with us inside the haunted house.” Zea challenged.

Keely heaved a deep sigh and nodded.

“Okay. Bring it on.” Scarlet declared.

Chapter 2: The Mysterious Black Cat

Chapter 2- The Mysterious Black Cat

Ten minutes had passed still no vehicle was in sight.

“C’mon guys. I think the jeepney won’t pass on this road considering this time of the night.” Zea decided. “We’ll wait for our ride at the end of this street.”

“Whaat?” Scarlet squealed. “A-at the… end of this street?”

“Yeah. What’s the matter with you?” Darcie wondered by the abrupt reaction of her friend.

“Well guys, if you haven’t noticed, the end of this road will be the Emerald Street. And that’s where the Mort mansion is located.” Cleo explained.

“It’s like waiting for a ride in front of the haunted estate!” Keely reacted.

“Don’t tell me you believe that silly story?” Darcie asked back.

“You two chickens?” Zea challenged. “If you want to stay here and wait for an eternity to pass by, then suit yourself. I’m going home.”

“C’mon. You two won’t find a ride here until morning. Let’s go. There’s nothing to be afraid of.” Chloe soothingly told her friends.

“Wish it was that easy.” Keely muttered.

The group started to trudge along the cemented, dark path, their sneakers pounded through the hard road. The lights from the posts casted an eerie glow enough for them to make out the house’ silhouettes. The trees loomed in the shadows, its frightening branches appears like long bony hands. The air was moist. The moon shone in the dusky sky. Everybody was fast asleep for no soul was in sight.

A black cat then suddenly springs out of nowhere which caused them to scream.

“What the --- hey, it’s just an animal!” Zea clarified.

“I…I was scared to death!” Scarlet related, panting from the unexpected outburst.

“H-hey guys. I know where the cat came from.” Keely uttered.

“Where?”

“Oh, my. Look at where we are standing.” Cleo pointed at the run-down house. Through the gloomy lights that the streetlight gave, they can still make out the dilapidated and shabby mansion of the Mort family.

“So what if a cat came from it? It may be a stray animal and this is where it lives now.” Darcie explained.

“Uh. I don’t like it here. I wanna go home!” Scarlet wailed.

“Shut up, Scarlet! Stop acting like a five-year-old.” Zea asserted. “You’re giving me a headache.”

“Zea, Scarlet is just scared. I mean, all of us were.” Cleo explained.

“I’m not scared at any black cat.” Zea mocked.

The cat purred piercingly and jolted up to Zea, burying its tiny paws in her arms. Zea howled in pain. Darcie pulled the cat away from her friend and threw it to the ground. Keely tossed a stone which caused it to run away.

“Are you okay?” Keely rushed to Zea.

“Yeah.” Zea replied. “Its juts a scratch. Stupid cat.”

Scarlet spoke up. “It’s like…the cat is possessed or something…I really wanna go home!”

“It was just an abandoned animal gone wild.” Darcie said. “Nothing to be afraid of.”

A sigh of relief was heard when the sound of a jeepney coming to a halt broke the silence. They all got in, Zea was the last. From the distance, she observed the same black cat, its green eyes full of hatred buried unto hers.

“C’mon, Zea!”

She turned around to have one last glance at the cat but it disappeared in the darkness.

“It was a stormy night. Eleanor’s parents went on some business party so she was alone inside the house. It was fun at first, doing what she wants to do & eating her heart out. But it was getting late, so she started to worry. All of a sudden, there was a power failure which left her in the darkness. Eleanor heard some creaking sound behind her. And then...”

“And then what?” Scarlet asked.

“What happened?” Keely inquired.

“Then a ghost suddenly jumps out of nowhere scaring Eleanor to death.” Zea cut in. “Right, Darcie?”

Darcie shrugged. She was the one who was telling the story to her friends. They were currently munching on some chips at Fenella’s house, their favorite place to hang out. “I was just gonna say that it was just her parents that got home.”

Scarlet winced. “What kind of a scary story was that? It wasn’t even entertaining.”

“Who says anything about a scary story?” Darcie shot back.

“Maybe because the story has a creepy beginning.” Chloe answered.

“Puh-lease.” Darcie rolled her eyes. “Can’t you guys take a laugh?”

“That’s enough you guys. Let’s finish this project so you all can go home. It’s getting late” Fenella finally said.

The group then settled to finish their work. Cleo was in front of the computer with Keely. Scarlet was cutting out some pictures in old magazines. Darcie and Zoe were designing their paper while Fenella was bringing the dirty dishes to the sink.

“Do you guys really believe that?” Keely suddenly asked. She was not paying attention to their research. “That ghost exist?”

“Of course not! They were just created by the rich imagination of writers like us, Keely.” Zea replied. She was always the frank one.

“Why not, Zea? I mean, who knows really?” Scarlet reacted.

“Don’t tell me you believe them?” Darcie asked back.

“I do.”

“Scarlet! What’s that behind you?!” Zea suddenly exclaimed.

“She turned around but nothing was there. “Ha-ha. Very funny Zea.”

“I believe in ghost when I see one.” Darcie proudly announced.

“That’s a harsh statement Darcie. Wouldn’t you be afraid if you come face to face with one of them?” Cleo remarked.

“Then, we’ll be scaring ourselves.” She laughed hard, her golden curls bouncing back and forth.

“Are you guys talking about ghosts again?” Fenella came back with some sandwiches.

“We don’t have anything to talk to, Fen.” Keely stated. “Besides it’s just for fun.”

“I know. But it’s no more fun when you had experienced one scary encounter.” Fenella said seriously.

“You mean you had stumbled upon a ghost?” Keely asked, her hazel brown eyes went wide.

“No. Stumble is not the word. But I heard true stories about them.” Fenella laid the sandwiches on the table. With that, her friends settled beside her.

“Like what?” Scarlet urged.

“Well, have you seen the house by the Emerald Street?” Fenellea asked her friends.

“You mean the abandoned house residing at the end of this road?” Cleo answered.

“The ones occupying almost one block?” Zea pondered.

“Yup. That’s it. Many spooky things had happened in there. And, I also know the story behind that residence.” Fenella’s voice almost sounded as a whisper.

Keely gulped down a glass of water. Somehow, the room got colder. The tiny hairs at the back of her neck tingled.

“It was on the 30th of November, 10 years had passed when a tragedy on the Mort family happened. They were the one who owned the mansion. Galton was a stern and vicious man. His wife, Margaret was the exact opposite of him. She was a calm and gentle woman. They had a daughter named Kameko.”

“Kameko was a modest lass. She was simple and she remained humble even if she owned plenty of fortune. She met Patrick, a deprived country boy and fell in love with him. But, their relationship was forbidden by her father. So, one night, with the help of Kameko’s friends, she and Patrick decided to elope.”

‘Then, what happened?” Scarlet asked. She had been holding her uneaten sandwich for too long. She didn’t want to miss out any word of the story.

“Galton found out. He had a plan. He met with Patrick secretly and he told the lad that his daughter doesn’t really love her and that she was just playing with a poor boy like him. Patrick felt devastated learning Kameko was never serious with him. And so, he left. Some said he was run over by a car. Nobody really knows what happened.”

“And so what happened to Kameko?” Keely wondered. “And their plans in eloping?”

“She didn’t know. She thought the plans would still go on. And so, on the night of November 30th, Kameko waited for Patrick by the old willow tree. She waited and waited. But Patrick didn’t come. Her heart was filled with grief. And by that tree, she committed suicide.”

“The next morning, Margaret found the lifeless body of Kameko and a knife on her hand. Losing her daughter, she died with anguish and sorrow. And as for Galton, I don’t really know. His body wasn’t found yet and the real cause of his death.”

After Fenella told the story, everybody else in the room was silent. No one dared to speak.

“What a sad tragedy to the Mort family.” Keely muttered under her breath.

“Tragedy? I bet it was just a story made up by some crazy people in your street, Fen.” Darcie spoked up.

“Yeah. I agree with Darcie here. And a story will always remain to be a story. Bet I can make a more frightening one of your house, Fen.” Zea agreed.

“I don’t know what to believe but we better be safe than sorry.” Fenella stated.

“Well, that’s a scary story, if it was.” Keely replied.

“Yeah.” Scarlet nodded.

“Anyway, let’s all put that behind our worries. It’s getting late. I think you all should be on your way home.” Fenella finally stated.

“Yeah. And I should be on my way home now. You know how strict my parents are.”

“Okay then.” Cleo said as she was cleaning their small mess.

“We’ll all be back at your house tomorrow then.” Zea proposed.

”Do I have a choice?” Fenella teasingly said.

“Darcie and I placed the unfinished project at the top of your computer desk.” Keely explained to her friend.

“Okey-dokey. Careful you guys.”

“Bye, Fen. See you tomorrow!” Darcie and the others waved goodbye.
